La Guagua 47: a story about a young Latina’s journey to belong in Philadelphia

La Guagua 47 (The 47 bus) is a landmark project by Ritmo Lab

Inspired by Alba Martínez’s unforgettable experience as a young Puerto Rican arriving in Philadelphia alone in 1985, this short film tells the touching story of a young Latina navigating loneliness in a bustling city, yearning for her Latino roots and culture. One day she discovers the 47 bus, leading to a journey of self-discovery and community connection.

1,000 Philadelphia artists and community members participated

La Guagua 47’s celebration of Latinidad engaged hundreds of Philadelphia artists and community members in the project who contributing their talents – visual art, music, dance, film, fashion, makeup, storytelling, and acting – to create a moving tribute to Latino Philadelphia.

The film had a sold out premiere at the Kimmel Center

La Guagua 47 elevates marginalized voices and celebrates the richness and beauty of Latino culture. It claims space for those unheard, promoting a powerful message of unity and belonging. The film’s premiere party at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center during Hispanic Heritage Month was met with critical acclaim, solidifying its role as a beacon for community representation and cultural pride.
